Cape May Surprise Engagement

Jenna and Tom engagement Saturday, August 24, 2019 at Congress Street Beach in Cape May, New Jersey. (Photo by William Thomas Cain / CAIN IMAGES)

Had a great time last Saturday evening making pictures as my friend Tomsurprised his girlfriend, Jenna, with a proposal at the clock on Washington Street Mall. He had family and friends hide out in stores until the big moment. Probably one of the most fun surprise engagements I’ve ever photographed. After she said yes, and it was official, we walked to the Perry Street beach for some more pictures. Before that, the folks at Bath Timecame out to present the couple with a rubber duck bride and groom. The party continued over at The Rusty Nail. Great night!! And Congrats to the happy couple!!

Engagement Session at the Ballpark

Couple Poses in Dugout

When the engaged couple are Phillies fans, you shoot their engagement pictures at the ballpark.

Whenever doing an engagement session, the first thing I ask a bride and groom is where they met, or do they have a special place to them. Most times they’ll say college, or a park or a restaurant or a town, etc… The idea here is to personalize their session to them specifically. What matters to them? What is their favorite location as a couple? What might define them if there is a place like that in their lives?

Couple Shares a Moment in Dugout

Every now and again they’ll mention a ballpark. I’ve had couples ask to shoot at Longwood Gardens, The Art Museum, Valley Forge Park, Citizens Bank Park and Grounds for Sculpture to name a few.

While most locations are easy to pull off, a place like Citizens Bank Park calls for a bit more logistical issues. First, you have to get permission from the owner, The Phillies. Second, you have to pay a fee for renting the space. And you have to sign a bunch of paperwork. They have to have an escort available to you to take you from location to location. You can not go on the actual playing field, but everything else is open to you. Liability insurance is required as well. Not that you’ll need it, but you never know. Better to be safe than sorry. Some place just require a donation for entrance.

You’ll find that most places are open to allowing use of their locations, but be prepared to cover the rental fee. Some might not be, but all you have to do is ask. They can either say no or yes, and you won’t know unless you ask first. Some are free and some are not.

Personally, I love finding locations where no one has done an engagement session or even though of it yet. Let’s be the first to shoot at (fill in the blank).

Couple In The Rocks At Gibraltar

I made this image at Gibraltar in Wilmington, Delaware and love the setting. That moss really pops and the couple’s love shows through. It’s a moment in time captured for eternity. I was wandering around the location and stumbled upon this little nook and thought PERFECT! The bride and groom then sat down and I blended into the background, like I normally do for most shoots. It’s an art to be able to blend in, be unobtrusive and capture what happens in front of your eyes with good light and emotion. When it happens, it ROCKS!!

Delivering A Gallery Today

I’ll be delivering a gallery today to this lovely couple who held their wedding and reception at Grounds for Sculpture in Trenton a few weeks ago. What a great location and couple. Had a blast making pictures for these two.

ROBIN & FRANK

Bill was amazing: professional but friendly. Really took time to hear about my vision for the photography. He also provided a script of which photos he would take and in which order, but he was open to me adjusting the script to fit my needs. He visited the ceremony and reception sites in advance to scope them out, and he told me about how the sunlight affected the timing of what photos he took where. He was also great fun taking engagement photos. I could not have asked for a better wedding photographer. I’m going to have him take photos for my one-year anniversary as well!

15 QUESTIONS YOU NEED TO ASK YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER

1: Are you the photographer that will photograph my wedding?

Make sure the photographer that you’ve hired to photograph your wedding is the ACTUAL photographer that will show up that day. Many times when hiring a studio, the studio can have 3-8 weddings in a single day. You should be able to meet with the photographer that will photograph your wedding when booking the day.

2: Can I see your three most recent wedding photography shoots?

Always ask to see the studio’s most recent wedding and engagement work. A general rule of thumb is to ask to see the most recent three weddings or engagement sessions. You’ll want to see full sessions, not just the edits.

3: What your photographic style?

Are they traditional, contemporary, photojournalistic or artistic?

The traditional style is a more formal way of shooting. Think stiff and a bit more rigid.

The contemporary style photographer is less formal and a bit more relaxed. Think loose but spontaneous.

A photojournalistic style is a documentary style that captures the day as it happens.
Think candid and fly on the wall.

The artistic style is based upon the photographer’s ability to create a unique set of images in their style.

4: Can you provide a shot list or guideline?

Some of the most candid images come from good planning. It helps to have an idea what images or moments a photographer looks for when photographing a wedding.

5: Can you provide additional photographers?

Large wedding parties are much better served with 2 photographers. A wedding with more then 150 guests it’s generally a good idea to have 2 photographers for multiple coverage.

6: Is there a limit on the amount of images you will shoot?

Some photographers have a cap on how many images they will make during wedding. Also ask how many images will be provided in the final product. If they shoot 4,000 images from an 8 hour wedding, many will you actually see? Do they offer 4×6 proofs or a wedding web gallery? Can they provide images on DVD? How many?

Thea & Kent

7: What types of albums do you offer?

Wedding albums styles vary. Some books are simple prints mounted on the page while others can be flush mount leather cover with images printed directly onto the page.

8: How long after your wedding will we receive your images?

What is the turnaround time for receiving images. Good workflow by a studio can get your images to you quickly.

9: How long will it take to receive the album?

Once you’ve approved your album design, how long will it take to deliver the album. Delivery times can vary. If you want your book by Christmas to show off to family and friends, by all means, communicate that with your photographer.

Lily & Tom

10: Is there a travel fee for different locations?

If your reception is far away from the ceremony site, you’ll want to know if there will be an additional fee for travel or miles.

11: Can you customize a package?

Maybe you don’t see a package that you like. Ask if the photographer can customize a package to suit your needs.

reenie_00648

12: How much of a deposit is needed to book you?

It’s good to ask how much is needed to reserve the date as well as the fee schedule. Maybe they offer a payment plan.

Robin & Frank

13: Do you have a backup photographer in case something happens?

If something happens to the photographer on the day of your wedding does the photographer have someone to step in and do the shoot.

14: Do you have liability insurance?
